Trigger Point Injections
A trigger point injection (TPI) is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat painful ``knots`` in muscles (trigger points) that fail to relax. These knots can cause localized pain or referred pain, which is discomfort felt in a completely different part of the body.
In our office, we use sterile techniques and disposable instruments only for all procedures. No instruments are autoclaved for re-use. A medical assistant is always present for safety and support.
How the Procedure Works
- Identification: A healthcare provider locates the trigger point by feeling for a “taut band” or nodule in the muscle.
- Injection: A small needle is inserted into the knot to deliver a solution.
- Common Substances: The injection typically contains a local anesthetic like lidocaine to numb the area. Sometimes a corticosteroid (steroid) is added to reduce inflammation.
- Timeframe: The entire process usually takes about 15-20 minutes and is performed in a doctor’s office.
Conditions Treated
TPIs are most used for pain in the neck, shoulders, and lower back. They are effective for:
- Myofascial Pain Syndrome: Chronic pain in the connective tissue (fascia) covering the muscles.
- Tension Headaches: Specifically, those triggered by knots in the neck or upper back.
- Fibromyalgia: Helping to manage specific tender spots associated with this condition.
- Muscle Injuries: Such as those from sports, whiplash, or repetitive strain.
Benefits and Recovery
- Relief Timing: Some patients feel relief almost immediately, though it typically takes 24 to 72 hours for the full effect.
- Duration: Pain relief generally lasts from one month to several months, depending on the person and the underlying cause.
- Rehabilitation: TPIs are often used alongside physical therapy, as reducing the pain allows for more effective stretching and strengthening exercises.
- Low risk: TPIs are generally considered very safe with low risk
- Downtime: There is usually no downtime, though you may be advised to avoid strenuous activity for a few days.
